NEW ZEALAND CRICKET
MERRITT AS A COACH CANTERBURY APPOINTMENT (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. W. E. Merritt, formerly Canterbury and New Zealand representative cricketer, and the best slow bowler New Zealand has produced for many years, has been engaged as professional coach to the Canterbury Cricket Association for the coming season. Merritt has been playing in Lancashire League since 1932, and has been one of the outstanding players in League cricket. He bolds the League bowling record, which had previously been field by the great Barnes. Merritt will take up his duties as coach early in October.
