PLIGHT OF YOUNG MAN

POLICE WITHDRAW CHARGE SUFFERING FROM LACK OF FOOD When Herbert ’ Granville Moon, aged 29 years, faced the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court a week ago It was stated that he was suffering from want of food, that he had been sleeping out in the country and had no work and no home. On Wednesday the police withdrew the charge against him of being an idle and disorderly person, accused stating that he would stay in the Salvation Army Home until he got work. When he had been remanded on July 10, said Senior-Sergeant Calwell, Moon had been in a very low condition physically and there was some doubt as to his mental condition. In the meantime Major Dry had seen accused, who had previously been under his care. He was quite satisfied that accused’s condition was due to his having slept out and wandered about without proper care. “Since he last appeared in Court some kind lady has given him a suit of clothes, and a gentleman gave him a pull-over, shirt and other clothing.” said the senior-sergeant. He is quite recovered physically and Major Dry has offered to take him back into the Salvation Army Home until he gets work. I may say that during this week a man came to us and said that he would find a job for Moon, but he has not returned since. “Accused will be all right when he has got a job. I would like to point out that when we arrested and charged him it was really for his own protection and good.” Accused was not sub-normal, said Major Dry, but he seemed to have lapses, when he would wander off. “It was pure and simply that I was out of work, sir,” said accused from the dock. “I just want work.”
