“Freedom of the Baths.”

A Scottish joke fully appreciated at the end was perpetrated at the young farmers educational course by the Mayor (Mr. John Miller), states the “Southland Times.” The president of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr C. B. Tapley) had earlier twitted him about the council doing something • for the youths attending” the course, and the Mayor rose to say that he i would grant them the freedom of the ' Municipal Tepid Baths if they pre- ' sented themselves wearing their spec- ■ ial badges. The applause which greeted this announcement changed to great hilarity when a statement following it disclosed that the baths are at present closed for the customj ary winter period!
