Scared About ’Quakes.
“Everybody in Australia is scared about our earthquakes/’ said Mr Barton Ginger, of Wellington, who returned on the Marama after a short holiday visit to Sydney. “There were full-page stories of the recent shake in some of the newspapers, but the more dignified papers were very reasonable and fair. I believe earthquakes are a definite factor in deterring some people from coming to New Zealand.” Defiant Ratepayers. Instructions were given to the Petone town clerk (Mr H. Firth) by the Borough Council recently, to prosecute a number of ratepayers who had refused to pay the 10 per cent, penalty demanded on overdue rates. It was stated th’at a number of ratepayers had actually defied" the council to take action. The council also resolved to remit the 10 per cent, penalty on a number of ratepayers who had made every endeavour to pay their rates and had done so by instalments. The amount remitted was £146 14/-.
