SPEED AND SAFETY

IN MELBOURNE AIR RACE DOUBTS EXPRESSED LONDON, March 28. Uneasiness has been expressed in some quarters that competitors in the Melbourne Centenary air race, after obtaining a certificate of airworthiness in conformity with tho International Air Federation’s standard, might alter their machines in order to increase the speed, but lowering the safety factor. Mr Perrin, secretary of the Aero Club, said to-day that certificates from the countries of the comnetitors’ origin will bo accepted witnout question. Nevertheless, any attempt to fly a machine found to bo below the required standard would result in disqualification. Another authority said that any entrant was entitled to challenge a machine allegedly not conforming with the requirements, but otherwise there would be no preliminary tests, the committee accepting the principle that the competitors’ honesty would be backed by the deterrent that an unsafe machine, irrespective of its speed, probably would fail to complete the course.
