LONE VIGIL

OF ADMIRAL BYRD URGED TO RETURN TO BASE By Telegraph—Copyright —Press Assu. NEW YORK, April 6. Mr. Jacob Ruppert, one of the principal backers of the Antarctic expedition, after a discussion on conditions with Commander Gjertson, sent a radio message to Rear-Admiral Byrd urging him to abandon his plan to occupy an advance post through the winter night.

“I am very much -worried about your personal safety and earnestly urge your return to the base,” said Mr. Ruppert. The first question Mr. Ruppert asked Commander Gjertson was: “Why is Byrd down there all by himself?” The Commander responded: “I don’t know, but the hut would have been a tight fit for two men?’ He explained that it had been the original plan to have two men to undertake the observations, but the delay caused by difficulties in landing supplies, had made this impossible.”
