BIG STABLE FIRE
AT RANDWICK, N.S.W. THREE YEARLINGS BURNT SYDNEY, April 6. Three thoroughbred sold at yesterday’s bloodstock sales perished when fire destroyed the wooden stables and sale ring of Messrs. H. Chisholm and Co. at Randwick this morning. The yearlings were a brown filly by Grosvenor, which brought 70 guineas; a black colt by Rosewing, T4O guineas; a chestnut gelding by Diacquenod, 65 guineas. A house alongside, occupied by Mr T. Sweeney, was gutted. Another part of Chisholm's stables occupied by Mr. Fred Williams’s horses, including Chatham, was undamaged. Chatham was qartered in a box on the east side of the stables, but was in no immediate danger, owing to the wind being in the opposite 'direction. Golden Wings was also in Mr. Williams’s stable.
’ Mr. George Price’s stables, in the same block, were also untouched. They contained Kuvera, Sir John, Whittingham, Ranchero, Blixten, Gladswood ,and several others which took part in the autumn meeting. Although they were in no immediate danger all the horses were removed to a safer locality. Mr. H. Chisholm lost polo equipment, harness and other gear valued at £2OO. The fire is believed to have started through a cigar butt igniting some coir matting in the arena. The sale ring, which was completely destroyed, was insured for £4900.
