IN MEMORIAM
<s> MR. ARCHIBALD HYSLOP Born in Hindon (Otago Central), in 18 91, the late Mr. Archibald Hyslop, whose death occurred in the Waipukurau Hospital on Thursday, first made the acquaintance of Waipukurau in 1906, at which period his father was an inspector of permanent ways in the Railway Department, holding the position in this area till 1908. The deceased was at the time of his enlistment in the 13th Reinforcement of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces an employee of the late Mr. R. Johnstone of Motuotaraia, and left for the front on the troopship Tofua, in May 1916. On arrival in France, he was posted to the Hawkers Bay Company, 2nd Wellington Infantry Battalion, and took part in the battle of the Somme in 1916, also other engagements. After the Armistice he returned to New Zealand in May 1919, on the troopship Arawa.
Since his discharge he had been in the service of the Railway Department, having been stationed at Napier, Marton, Kaitoke and Hatuma. Shortly after arriving at Hatuma he was admitted to the Waipukurau Hospital (on January 24, 1 930) and was an inmate of that institution up till the time of his death, during which time he earned the admiration of the nursing staff for the fortitude, patience and the kindly consideration he invariably displayed. He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs. J. C. Hyslop of Oamaru, and three sisters (Mrs. F. C. Cook, Ashhurst; Mrs. J. Phillipson, GoodWood, Otago) and Mrs. A. Baxter, Oamaru), and two brothers (Robert, Upper Hutt, and James, Dunedin). • The interment took place yesterday afternoon at the Waipukurau cemetery. The Rev. Canon E. D. Rice officiating, the representative cortege leaving St. Mary’s Church. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Robert and James Hyslop (brothers), C. Curly and A. Luke (brothers-in-law) of Pukehou, J. Rood and F. Culling Hatuma, the last two being excomrades in arms. “The Last Post’’ was sounded by Bandmaster Sergt. W. H. Bowman, of the Wellington Artillery Band in camp at Waipukurau. The local branch of the Returned Soldiers was represented by Mr. A. O. Williams, president and Mr. W. Steere, secretary, as well as other Veterans of the Great War.
