DESPERATE EFFORTS
To Recapture Chengtehfu CHINESE CLAIM SOME SUCCESS JAPS. HUMANITARIAN MOTIVE By Teiegraph—Copyright—Press Assn« SHANGHAI, Last Night. Chinese reports state that China is making desperate efforts to recapture Chengtehfu, there being serious lighting throughout the night of March 8. The Chinese claim that they drove back the Japanese for a considerable distance, losing 200 men in the process. The attacks arc being made by night in order to nullify aeroplanes. The Chinese arc sending considerable reinforcements to the vicinity of Wupcikow Pass, and are preparing to hold the position until the launching of an offensive under General Chiang Kaishek. The Japanese Legation at Peking is attempting to negotiate for the withdrawal of the Chinese forces in order to prevent further bloodshed and the extension of hostilities in North China. Otherwise the Japanese will he compelled to send troops through Shanhaikuan to attack the Chinese in the rear. The Japanese announce that operations will cease when the occupation of Kupeikow is completed.
