STOCK MARKET

Stortford Lodge Sale GOOD YARDING OF CATTLE DROP IN SHEEP PRICES There was a small yarding of fat and largo yarding of store cattle at the Stortford Lodge sale yesterday, thqre being about. 560 head cf store cattle and about 260 head of fat cattle offer cd. There was a smaller attendance cf buyers than usual. AV ith few exceptions the quality of the fat cattle was not up to the standard of recent sales. This refers particularly to cow- and heifers, of which none were up to the top quality of the last few weeks. Bullock values were firm at last rates for similar quality, but cow and neifc’’ prices were easier. Store sheep were not so numerous as Tor the past three or four weeks, about 9000®being offered. Bidding was very spiritless right through the sale, and in many cases failed to reach the vendors’ values, a large number of lines being passed in. On the whole the quality was not equal to that of the more recent sales, and this was perhaps one of the causes of lack of competition. The absence of good soaking rainfall, too, has had a depressing effect on the market. Wethers were in small supply but nevertheless were slow of sale. The yarding of lambs was larger than usual, and prices for the best linos were about on a parity with freezing values, anything not reaching that level being, in most instances, passed in. Smaller and inferior sorts showed a decided drop in prices. Breeding ewes held the market fairly well considering their number and quality, and though prices failed to reach last week’s level, the quality with very few exceptions, was not up to that of last week, and taken on the whole the drop in price is less than it might appear to be. jXEr Norman Law, Tiniroto, was represented by some very even quality ewes and others, which realised prices fairly representative of the day’s values. Mr C. W. Reeves, Putorino, also sent down some nice sheep, which sold at a parity with the best of the market prices. The highest price for 2-th ewes was 12/- for a nice lot from Moore’s Estate, Rissington. A nice line of 196 4 and 6-ths from Otamauri brought the same price. Four and 5-yr ewes from the same place brought 8/-. A line of 5-yr ewes, r.w. S.D. rams, brought 8/9. FAT AND STORE CATTLE Bullock beef prices were firm with those ruling last week, but cows and heifers were distinctly easier, this being due to an over-supply in the market. Station drafts were well represented, a particularly good draft being P.A. bullocks offered on account of Mr F. Douglas, of Elsthorpe, 3 prime bullocks selling at £6 19/-. A further three realised £6 15/-. Three P.A. cross bullocks, medium weights, sold at £4 19/-; a second cut of three slightly lighter bullocks £4 8/-. A further draft from Mr F. Doug--Is, three prime heavy weights, realised £7 0/6. Three other P.A. bullocks i from the same vendor, lighter finished sold at £6 12/-. A further draft of 6 P.A. bullocks sold at £6 15/- and £6 12/6 in two cuts. The last of the Elsthorpe bullocks, four P.A. prime heavy condition, realised £6 16/-; and three P.A. bullocks sold at £6 10/-. Two prime heavy weight P.A. bullocks, a fine pair of beasts, sold well at £7 4/-. A further pair of P.A. cross bullocks made an excellent price of £7 8/-. These were a particularly fine pair of beasts. Shorthorn "bullocks, two in the pen prime heavyweights, sold at £7 1/-. A single Hereford bullock, in wellfinished condition, was a good buy at £5 13/6, while another Hereford in similar order realised £5 12/6. Jersey bullocks, three well finished animals, of medium weights, were put by at £5 17/6. Three further Jersey bullocks were also passed at £5 17/6. A single P.A. bullock, a fine body of beef in prime heavyweight order, sold at £7 17/6. Three P.A. bullocks, medium finishedbeasts, but good fattening, realised £5 14/-. Hereford bullocks, three in the line,; 1 medium to heavy weights, in prime i order, sold at £6 3/- after some brisk ( bidding. c A big draft of P.A. and P.A. cross r bullocks, medium weights, fairly well 1 finished, sold at from £5 to £6 1/- in v six cuts. f A prime heavy .weight Here- t ford bullock, big framed and well t •covered, sold late in the sale at £B, a

top price of the day. A further single entry, Hereford beef, sold at £6 6/-. Two Hereford heifers, yiuggcty beasts in prime order, made a good price of £5 1/-. A further separate entry, <t well-finished Hereford heifer, realised £5 2/-. A single Hereford heifer, big framed and well covered, sold late in the sale at £4 15/-. A single P.A. heifer, nuggety and in prime order, had a good sale at £4 12/-. Hereford cows, two in number, prime medium weights, sold at £3 12/-. Two other Herefords, not so well finished, realised £3 1/-. Four P.A. cows, medium weight and condition, made £3 2/-. A single Hereford cow, well finished, sold nt £3 12/6. A single P.A. cow in prime order and of medium weight, had a good sale at £3 12/-. Store cattle wore well represented. 560 being yarded. Prices realised were lower than those of last week, but vendors seemed quite willing to accept the lowered prices in most cases, some linos being passed in. A line of Heroford-Shorthorn cross bullocks, down by road from north of Napier, sold at £4 5/-. These were a good line of store stock, and should be a good fattening proposition. Big framed, but in hard condition, six Shorthorn bullocks sold well at £4 7/6, the top price in the store section. Two-year steers made moderate prices, a line of 31 P.A. cross steers making £2 10/-. a. line of mixed 2 and 3-yr P.A. steers also made 2 10/-. Heroford-Shorthorn cross bullocks, hard conditioned and well framed, realised £4. Another draft of 71 steers, 2-yr olds. Herefords and Shorthorns sold well at. £2 15/-. P.A. steers, in good store condition, made £3 4/-, while eleven P.A. bullocks in fair order realised £4 2/-. STORE SHEEP
