INCREASED TAXATION
! Forecasted By Mr. Coates TO REDI'CE THE DEFICIT NO ALTERNATIVE TO BE SEEN (Special 1 to Press) (Per Press Association) AVY ELLINGTON, This Day. “To bring the prospective deficit down to what may be regarded as a safe amount. I am afraid there will be no alternative but to have further recourse to additional taxation," said the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in t he course of his statement to the House of Representatives to-day. It may be necessary to find ways and means of raising up to £2,500,000, which, with the other items I have mentioned, will be sufficient to bring the deficit down to about £4,500,000.
