USES OWN WASTE

AN ENGLISH FACTORY WILL BURN LONDON REFUSE The power-house at the Ford motor Works at Dagenham, where the fullscale production programme will shortly be starting, is designed to burn London refuse at the rate of 1,000 tons a day. The factory which is the largest motor factory in Europe, embodies many ingenious ideas for eliminating waste. It is almost self-contained, with its own power-house, its own blast furnace —the only one in southern England — its own coke ovens and plant for the production of many by-products. Among the last-named will be benzol, and cars will bo driven away from the factory running on motor spirit that has been produced there. Ingenious devices for securing safety and comfort for the workpeople have been installed. All windows are opened by electricity, one switch controlling eight tons of window and steel frame. Wherever possible British materials have been used. The ultimate production rate for the factory is estimated at 200,000 cars a year, and eventually 15,000 men will be employed if the present. programme is adhered to. A large part of the works will be devoted to the manufacture of the new Ford 8 h.p. ear which was introduced some months age.
