RUGBY FOOTBALL

Central H.B. Sub-Union MEETING LAST EVENING GENERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED A meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay' Rugby Sub-Union was held last evening, Mr B. L. Wallis presiding over the following members: Messrs R. S. Ricketts, J. Bell, F. R. Logan, W. Rust, T. Dunn, R. Wynn, A. Collett, P. Smyrk, L. R. Cutforth, W. Adams, and J. M. Reidy (secretary). Ordered Off Mr T. Spencer, referee for the High School Old Boys v. Waipukurau junior game last Saturday, reported having ordered off a H. 5.0.8. player, G. Blair, for striking an opponent. The player wrote stating that he had not been the aggressor. He had retaliated only after having boon struck repeatedly. He intended, to retire from the game. After some discussion Blair was suspended for four playing Saturdays. Seven-a-Side The secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Union wrote advising that the subunion’s application for permission to hold a Hawke’s Bay sevcn-a-sid,o tourney at Waipukurau on June 16, had been granted. The letter pointed out, however, that the Hawke ’s Bay v Wairarapa ten-a-side match for the Corbett McKnight trophy usually took place on that date. Air Smyrk suggested that he understood from Mr N. A. McKenzie that the ten-a-side match was no, to be played on June 16. Instead an athletic meeting for the Maddison Cup was to be held at Napier. Two Napier clubs had signified their intention of taking part in the Waipukurau tourney. It was decided, definitely to hold the tourney as suggested; also the 1.10 .yards championship for the Limbrick Cup, open to Hawke’s Bay footballers. The secretary was instructed to ask the Dannevirke and East Coast SubUnions to enter teams for the tourney. Referees’ Conference The secretary of the Central Hawke’s Bay Referees’ Association wrote advising that a conference of ■ Il referees resident in Hawke’s Bay w; -' to be held in the Masonic Hall at 7.30 p.m. on June 2. Members of the subunion were invited to attend. Mr L. R. Cutforth said that the object of the conference was to endeavour to secure a uniform ir ' 'rpretation of the rules throughout Hr-./ke’s Bay. The letter was received. Appointments Mr B. Nickalls was appointed to the position of senior selector. On the motion of Mr Collett, seconded by Mr Smyrk, it was resolved that the selector attend meetings only at the invitation of the sub-union,. Mr A. Collett was appointed, manager for the representative game, Napier-Hastings v. Central Hawke’s Bay and East Coast, at Waipawa on Saturday. Mr R. Wynn was appointed manager for the game at Napier on Juno 3. Napier-Hastings v. Central Hawke’s Bay. Studs in Boots The Hawke’s Bay Union wrote advising that boot studs, showing the nail protruding above the leather were not to be used in future. —Received. Fixtures to Stand Mr Wynn suggested that the following fixtures for June IS should, be re versed in order to save travelling: —• Senior: Te Ante v. Waipawa at Waipukurau; junior: Waipukurau v. Tp' Auto at Waipawa. , Mr Adams said that if the alteration were made it would amount to a vote of no confidence in the committee. “If we don’t adhere to the committee’s fixtures we might,as well ask it to resign,” he said. The secretary stressed the financial aspect, pointing out that better gates were obtained at Waipukurau. Messrs Collett and Dunn supported Mr Wynn, pointing out that Waipawa could not 'get the gates if mo games were not played there. The secretary said that he did not see how the fixtures could be arranged more evenly. Mr Bell, seconded by Mr Ricketts, moved that the fixtures, as drawn up be adhered to. Mr Wynn, seconded by Mr Col’st 4moved an amendment that the suggested alteration be made.

The amendment was lost and tho motion carried.

Onga Onga Juniors

It was pointed out by Mr Collett, that the Onga Onga junior team, having forfeited two matches, was auto-

matically eliminated from the competition unless provision otherwise was made by the sub-union. He moved that such provision be made. The motion was carried unanimously. JUNIOR TRIAL HASTINGS DEFEAT NAPIER Hastings gained a decisive victory by 22 points to five in a junior grade representative Rugby match played at McLean Park yesterday afternoon, for the purposes of picking the junior representatives to play Wairarapa at Masterton on Juno 3. The play was fast and fairly open, but the handling amongst the backs was noticeably weak, many golden opportunities being missed on the part of both teams through faulty passing and failure to accept those passes that were accurate. The Hastings forwards wore superior to the Napier pack and this was the chief factor in the former team gaining a victory. There were few alterations* in both teams, Mercer and Goldsmith replacing Lane and August respectively in the Hastings team and Keeblc replacing Grenside in the Napier team. H.B. SCRUM FORMATION SUBJECTED TO CRITICISM Apropos tho new scrum formation decided upon by the H.B. selector as against the usual 3—2 —3 or tho “Billy” Wallace advocacy of 3—3—2 (out old basis plus a “loose head,..) “KickOff” in the “H.B. Tribune” writes: —• A bombshell was exploded in BayRugby circles this wook when Selector Norman McKenzie chose eight backs and seven forwards to represent the combined Hastings-Napier Sub-Unions against Central Hawke’s Bay in a trial match at Waipawa to-morrow. Certainly change in the serum formation was expected, but few anticipated such a departure from tho accepted rule that a fifteen comprises eight forwards and seven backs.

Two half-hacks, Bert Cooke and Lambic, have been chosen. It is assumed that Lambic will be at the base of the scrum; but where docs Cooke come in? In the accepted English and Australian formations there are two halves —one called the “semm” half and the other the “fly” half —but there is then only one; five-eighth. The Combined team just- chosen includes Setford and Howell as the five-eighth line, so that obviously Bert Cooke is not to be

catered for in a position in the back lino. :!.! Where then will he be stationed? “Kick-off” anticipated that Cooke is to be given a roving commission; in other words he is- to play the role of wing-forward under the nom-de-plume of 4 ‘half-back.” Under the recent directions of the N.Z.R.U. the wing-forward is banned and these instructions have not by any means met with a unanimous reception, and it would seem that our selector is one of those who is inclined to “buck” against the ruling body. NORTH ISLAND TEAM TARANAKI NOMINATIONS (Per Press Association! NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night.. , The Taranaki nominations > for the North Island Rugby team are: —A. •Collins (Stratford, full-back), R. Clarke (Okaiawa, forward). Lost mv hat on the icy breeze. ” ostmy balance and bruised, my knees, ost my nerve in the drenching rain, Lost my ticket and lost the train,

Lost the chance for a business deal, Lost my temper and missed a meal, Lost, alas! most precious, be sure, Bottle o’ Wood’ Great Peppermint Cure
