DAYLIGHT ROBBERY
Daring Outrage In Auckland
MAN VIOLENTLY ASSAULTED
ASSAILANTS ESCAPE IN CAR
(Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. Shortly before noon two men entered the office of Parkinson and Co., monumental masons, in Victoria Street, in the city, assaulted the accountant, and stole £lO6 in single £1 notes. The men then jumped into a two-seater car and escaped. They were pursued by detectives. The accountant, named W. Dias, aged 35, was pinioned by both arms from behind by one man and punched unmercifully by the second. The money, which was in a bag, consisted of five bundles, each containing £2O and six single notes; also about £6 in silver. This latter was scattered over the footpath as the two men ran out and joined a third, who had remained at the wheel of the car. Dozens of people were in the vicinity, but the brazen robbery was committed so quickly that everybody was taken by surprise. However, the number of the car was noted. POLICE GIVE CHASE A later message states that the accountant was returning to the office from a bank and, when within a few yards of the office, he saw a man coming at him. He was struck a heavy blow on tho side of the head, staggered, and fell on the footpath near the doorway of an empty shop. Tho men then pounced on him and seized the money. He looked up and saw one man jump on the running board of a ear which quickly disappeared. A number of people looked on without helping, but it appeared that they were flabbergasted. An attempt was made by a constable to pursue the ear, but the vim. which he commandeered, was too slow. Just after starting from the scene of the robbery, the thieves’ car collided with another, car and narrowly escaped
capsize. Dias received medical attention, but is not seriously hurt.
