OBITUARY

MRS. E. J. HAYES The death occurred, in the Waipukurau Public Hospital this morning of Mrs. Emma Jane Hayes, aged 81. Mrs. Hayes was one of the earliest residents of Waipukurau. Born in England, Mrs. Hayes (nee Miss Mitchell) came to New Zealand about 1870, with Mrs. P. Gow, of Wellington Road. Arriving at Napier, she travelled by bullock-waggon to Mount Herbert, where she was employed by Mrs. H. Russell. While there, she was married to Mr. A. Hayes, who was then stud shepherd on the station. Later Mr. and Mrs. Hayes went to Te Hauke, where the former was appointed head shepherd for Mr H. Gaisford. After spending several years at Te Hauke, they were, for a time, in business in Waipukurau. Mr. Hayes died about 22 years ago. After his death, Mrs. Hayes was employed at the Waipukurau Hospital, holding the position of seamstress for fifteen years. During the last six years she has been confined to her bed as an inmate of this institution. Mrs. Hayes was a woman of sterling character, and, as one of the eldest residents of Waipukurau, was deeply respected by all who knew her. Among her relatives in New Zealand are: Mr. F. C. Mitchell, Waipawa (nephew);; Mrs. R. H. Florence, Eskdale (niece); Mrs. J. Blake, Waipukurau (niece). The funeral leaves St. Mary’s Church at 2.30 p.m. to-mor4-row, for the Waipukurau Cemetery.
