The secretary reported that the matter had been raised by a business man in Australia, but southern chambers in New Zealand and also Australian chambers wore unanimous that the matter was one for next-of-kin and returned soldiers rather than commercial interests, anc also that public opinion was not ripe for the change. The chamber took no action in the matter. Concert At Elsthorpe. On Friday last the “ Laughing Through” Company gave a bright and clever entertainment in the village hall to a large and appreciative audience. Practically all thp items were encored, and the various songs, dances and. sketches much enjoyed. At the close of the concert all were entertained to supper and. a dance followed, music being ‘ supplied by the visitors ’ orchestra and by''ldeal performers. At the close, Mt Sutherland, on behalf o£< the hall committee, thanked the performers for the splendid entertainment and called for three cheers, which were heartily given. Half the proceeds of the entertainment are to go to the local hall fund, and half to the unemployed funds. Friendly Societies Social

Under the auspices of the combined committee of the local Friendly Societies (Oddfellows and Foresters) a highly successful social and dance was held last night. Dancing was indulged in by the majority of patrons, Messrs G. Reg. Cook and J. Rapley being M.C.’s, while the Syncopators’ tra provided the music. Extras were played by Airs A. J. Mcßoberts, Mrs B. Cook and Miss M. Sharpin. Those tripping the light fantastic enjoyed themselves thoroughly. At the card tables superintended by Messrs D. J. Coughland and Duncan , were some 30 players, who found a full measure of pleasure from the pastime. A delicious supper was dispersed by a committee headed by Mrs G’. Reg. Cook, associated with her being Mr and Mrs and Miss Cochrane, Mesdames Wells, Cooper, Miss McKenzie . and Mr A. Bliss. ,

Labour Politics In Waipawa. Mr-H. G. Armstrong, member for Christchurch East, delivered a political address in the Waipawa Municipal Theatre last evening to an audience of about 200. He was accorded, a very attentive hearing and was frequently applauded in the course of his remarks. Dealing with the question of unemployment he strongly urged the development of our secondary industries to manufacture in the country what was at present being imported. He particularly pointed to the boot industry which at present was employing less than 7000 persons, whereas imports were two-thirds of the requirements of the country. Dealing with the currency problem he advocated the establishment of a State bank. He also dealt at length with government by commission. At the close of his address he was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks on the motion of the Mayor (Mr G. Hunt),-..
