ALLEGED ASSAULT
On A Maori M.P.
DISMISSED BY MAGISTRATE
BAD LANGUAGE PENALISED
(Per Press Association) WHANGAREI, This Day.
Charges of assaulting Mr. Tau Henare, M.P. (Northern Maori Electorate) and of using obscene language were, preferred against Frederick Stratford Beachman, before Mr Morris, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. ’ The evidence, which was of a conflicting nature, showed that the failure of Mr. Henare’s son to close a gate at the Motatau railway-yard led defendant to use bad language to him. Mr. Tau Henare, on approching defendant, was struck, an eye being blackened, making necessary his temporary absence from Parliament.
The Magistrate dismissed the assault charge, but fined Beachman £5 for using bad language.
