ONLY UNPLACED ONCE Gloaming was the champion horse of his day in both New Zealand and Australia and for several years held the record as a stake-earner, his total being 43,100 sovs. He was bred tn 1915 at the Melton Stud in Victoria, by Mr E. E. D. Clarke, being by The Welkin from Light, and was purchased for 230 guineas on behalf of Mr G. D. Greenwood, of Canterbury in whose colours he did all his racing. He was not raced as a two-year-old owing to going shin sore. He

did not go into training again till just before he went to Australia in 1918 with Biplane and Molyneaux. Gloaming’s first race was in the Chelmsford Stakes, nine furlongs, at Randwick, in 1918, and though he lost several lengths at the start he quickly made up his ground and won by eight lengths in 1.52, a record for Australia and New Zealand. His next start was in the A.J.C. Derby, and he won in 2.33 i. Returning to Wellington, he annexed the. Champion Plate, one mile and <: a quarter, in a canter. The New Zealand Derby at Riccarton also went to him, but on the last day of that meeting he was beaten in the Stead Cup by that good horse Sasanof. Coming on to Auckland at Christmas he annexed the Islington Plate, one mile, and the Great Northern Derby. At the. Wellington summer fixture a little later he accounted for the Wellington Stakes, five furlongs, and the Kelburn Plate, four furlongs. Gloaming’s second defeat was in the Taranaki Stakes, six furlongs, when, after an eyciting contest, Desert Gold, who had a 101 b advantage in the weights, beat him by half a length in 1.13 —a record fo? the race. In the Egmont Stakes, of similar distance, however, Gloaming beat her easily. He then added the Jackson Stakes, six furlongs, at Wanganui, the Wanganui Guineas and the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, seven furlongs, at Riccarton to his credit. The greatest tragedy in his career occurred in the North Island Challenge Stakes, at Trentheam, where he got caught in the tapes and fell, Warplane winning. This was the only time Gloaming was unplaced, and the only occasion on which he was further back than second. His total to date was 12,176 sovs. His last season was in 1924-25, when he again made a trip to Australia, being beaten in the Chelmsford Stakes by Heroic, and the Hill Stakes by Ballymena. However, he won the A.J.C. Spring Stakes and Craven Plate at Randwick and the Melbourne Stakes, at Flemington, and on his return home won five more events in the Dominion, winding up with a win in the Ormond gold Cup, his stake money being 8,197 sovs.

Gloaming started 67 times, for 57 wins, nine seconds and one unplaced performance, and altogether won 43,100 sovs. He was trained by R. J. Mason.
