WOMEN’S SOLO FLIGHT

ACROSS THE ATLANTIC MRS PUTNAM TAKES OFF By Telegraph—Copyright—Press As. VANCOUVER, May 19. A message from Hasbrouok Heights, New Jersey states that Mrs Amelia Earhart Putnam took off from Teterboro Airport on Thursday afternoon for Harbour Grace on the first leg of what she hopes will be the first solo flight by a woman across the Atlantic. Mrs Putnam is being accompanied on the first leg by Bcrnt Balchen and. Eddie Gorski, mechanic, using a fast Lockheed monoplane. A message from St. John, New Brunswick, states that Mrs Putnam arrived there this evening. She is expected to stay there to-night. Better known by her maiden name, Amelia Earhart, Mrs Putnam was the first woman to fly the Atlantic. In company with Wilmer Stutz and Louis Gordon, a mechanic., she flew in a seaplane Friendship, from Newfoundland to Burry Point, Wales, in June 1928. Should she succeed on her latest adventure she will rob Colonel Lindbergh of the honour of being the only person to have made a solo flight across the North Atlantic. Homeward Bound GERMAN AIR-LINER NEW YORK, May .19. The German air-liner Do X took off at 4 a.m. to-day for Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, the first lap of her return flight to Lake Constance, Switzerland. The Do X arrived here last August. There is a crew of fourteen aboard.

A message from Halifax (Nova Scotia) reported that the Do X passed at 10.15 a.m.

A later message from Harbour Grace states that the Do X landed at Dildo, Trinity Bay, at 5.16 p.m.
