THE BASIC WAGE

WILL NOT BE REDUCED

The Premier, Mr. Stevens, announced that if the present Government were returned, the Ministry did not intend to reduce the basic wage, as alleged by their opponents. The reproductive works for the relief of unemployment would begin on Monday. . ! 'r

The Government intends to review the appointments of Conciliation Committees,, from which the Lang Administration had excluded the Australian Workers’ Union representatives and those of other unions not connected with the Trades Hall.

INDUSTRY MAKES A FRESH

START

SYDNEY, May 20. Renewed confidence in industry { .s manifested since the change of Government. The works of the Standard Portland Cement Company will re-open immediately; employment will be found for about three hundred men. . i

Three patriotic citizens have forwarded cheques for £5OO, £lOO and £5O, respectively, to the Premier and Treasurer, to be used by the Government as a free loan until such time as it can be applied towards the payment'of taxes due by the citizens.

FROM BLANKETS TO WINES

CANBERRA, May 20.

After a continuous sitting of 33 hours, the House of Representatives rose, having discussed five items of the Government's tariff policy. A Government proclamation removes the prohibition on the importation of glucose, cornflour starch, custard powders, furs and other skins, blankets, rugs, curtains, textile blinds, vinegar, wines, vermouth and locomotives.
