Practical Help.

A donation of firewood has been made to several married men of the town who are on relief work, by a generous spirited resident of the district. In all seven cords were made available and needless to say the gift has been most acceptable. Social Function. A most successful social function was held in the Masonic Hall last evening, when Mesdames Paul Hunter, Percy Hunter, C. Giblin, P. P. Wall, C. Pattison and J. W. Harding entertained over a hundred young people of the district. The hall was gaily decorated with Chinese lanterns, greenery and yellow chrysanthemums. The evening was spent very pleasantly in dancing and a delicious supper was served. Favourably Impressed.

Mr J. N. McLeod, President of r he Horticultural Trades Association, who has just spent a few days in Hawke's Bay, has expressed himself' as greatly impressed with the latent horticultural possibilities of Waipukurau and the surrounding district. He spoke in glowing terms of the foresight displayed by the early pioneers, especially in connection with forest and shelter planting. He suggested that the time was opportune for extending planting operations each year. Mr McLeod was very much surprised with the extent of the fruit areas in the province and the excellence of the fruit, also the heaviness of the crops harvested-. v '• Horticulaural Progress.

Speaking at a meeting- of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, Mr J. N. McLeod, N.D.H., (N.Z.), of Christchurch, stated in the course of special reference to horticultural education in Christchurch that there are now 30 students attending the classes and good progress was being made by them. Botany and zoology was being taught by a University lecturer, while for practical subjects some twelve Tutors were available, each being an expert in his own branch of knowledge. The students were shaping well in all phases of instruction. Mr Mansfield, another speaker, dealt with the excellence of the Christchurch National Show, also the schemes of railway station beautification carried out in Scotland, Sweden and other countries. Home and. School League. The first of a series of social functions to bo conducted during the winter by the Home and School League was held last evening, meeting with complete success socially as well as financially. The large attendance must have been very gratifying to the committee, which, under the guidance of "the chairman (Mr D. B. Mills) and the secretary (Mrs D. Urquhart) was responsible for organising the func- , tion. Mr J. Bryce, assisted by others, provided excellent music for the dancing, Mr J. Bapley being the M.C. The card room was supervised by Mr H. Bowlands, the winners of the •euchre beifig Mrs Eustegc and Mr Bussell. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs T. Thompson and Mr C. Davies. Sporting and Dramatic.

A splendid combination is achieved in this week’s issue; ,of the ”N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” by the mingling of choice subjects of overseas interest and the latest happenings of Dominion wide importance. The majority of sportsmen still retain ft feeling of pride arid affection for the erstwhile New Zealand champion, Gloaming, and as a last tribute he is made the subject of the coloured supplement included in the current number. As usual the centre double pages attract attention by the wide diversity of subjects portrayed, International Curling Championship, Giant Railway 'Turntable, Varied Outdoor Sports in the Old Country and the Unveiling of the Memorial to Peers, etc.
