AIR HEROES ENGAGED
NEWS CAUSES SURPRISE
MOLLISON AND MISS JOHNSON
LONDON, May 18.
Mr J. A. Mollison’s engagement to Miss Amy .Johnson, as announced in “The Times’’ has come as a great surprise in view of his statement a week or two ago that he expected to wait a year before announcing his engagement to Lady Diana Wellesley. In addition, Miss Johnson, on her return from South Africa, said: “There is no truth in the rumour that I am engaged. Moreover, I am not likely to be.’’
“I have known Miss Johnson for years,” said Mi’ Mollison to-night. “I met her in Australia at the conclusion of her historic flight.
Miss Johnson said: "We renewed our friendship in Capetown and became engaged in the last few days. Mr Mollison is a great fellow, and I have the highest admiration for him.” Mr Mollison refused to comment on the previous reports that he was betrothed to Lady Diana, who last month declared: “Mollison is the first man I really loved, and I hope everything will be all right at the end of the year. ’ ’ Miss Johnson was included in the recent “News-Chronicle” interviews of the younger generation, and said: “Marriage? Probably no. I will not marry somebody who will be known 1 as 'Amy Johnson’s husband.’ I anr absolutely heart whole.”
