THE TOTAL NOW 2422 . DECREASE FOR NAPIER The number of registered unemployed in Hawke’s Bay during the past week increased by 58, the present total being 2422. The figures for Hastings and the various subdistricts throughout Hawke’s Bay have increased by 71 during the week, but those for Napiei- have decreased by 13, this being due to the fact that a number of men have been placed in steady work on the new Masonic Hotel. The following are the figures for the province, those in • parentheses representing the corresponding figures for last week: —Napier, 989 (1002); Hastings, 701 (666); subdistricts, 732 (696); total, 2422 (2364).
Men placed in employment under the No. 5 scheme during the past week total 315 in Napier and 279 in Hastings. Of Napier’s total of registered unemployed, 661 men with dependents- and 260 without are fit for heavy work, while 53 men with deepndents and 15 without can do light work only. The corresponding figures for Hastings are 549, 138, 14 and nil.
