TAUPO ROAD ROUTE

MAY BE OPENED TO-DAY FILLING IN AND CLEARING 1 The direct route to Taupo from Napier, which has been closed for the first 20 miles since the floods about a fortnight ago, is expected to be open for traffic by late this afternoon. Those who are contemplating making use of the damaged portion of the road today and to-morrow are advised to communicate with the Hawke’s Bay County Council officials in order to ascertain the definite position before commencing their journey. Large numbers of men, numbering as many as 100, have been engaged during the last few weeks in repairing the damage which was done on Dillon’s Hill, where, in addition to clearing away the slips, the principal work has been in filling in of the large wash-out.

The wash-out has now been almost repaired and culverts laid down, so that today it is expected that the road will be sufficiently wide at this portion to allow one car to pass over at a time. As further work is done the road will be widened to its normal width for traffic.

Slips have also occurred during the wet spell on other parts of the road,

but men are engaged at the present time in removing these. At no place are they sufficiently bad to completely block traffic, but at places careful driving is essential. When the major damage is repaired attention will be given to the surface of the . iad, and metalling will be carried ouv.

Now that the direct route is open once again for traffic, it will not be necessary for those travelling between Napier and Taupo to make the deviation over the Glengarry road.
