OBITUARY
HON W. PEMBER REEVES LONDON, May 16. The death is announced of William Pember Reeves. The Hon. William Pember Reeves was born in Canterbury, New Zealand, on February 10, 1857. He commenced his career as a barrister but forsook the law in favour of journalism. He became editor of the Canterbury “Times” and of the Lyttelton “Times.” He was a member of Parliament from 1887-96, holding the portfolios of Education, Labour, and Justice. In 1896 he became Agent-General for the Colony, and was its High Commissioner from 1905 to 1909. From 1908 to 1910 he was director of the London School of Economics. His publications include “The Long White Cloud,” a history of New Zealand, “State Experiments in Australia and New Zealand,” and numerous pamphlets. He also contributed artiples to the Encyclopedia Brittanica and the Dictionary of National Biography. At the time of his death he was chairman of the National Bank of New Zealand and he had been a member of the Senate of the University of London from 1902 till 1917.
