WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING HELD LARGE NUMBER PRESENT The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs E. J. Turner, president, presiding over an attendance of over 50 members. The motto for the day was: “The wing of friendship never moults a feather,” and this was used by Mrs. Turner as the text for a short talk on friendship. Two demonstrations were given, one by Mrs. A. J. Young on sea-grass stools, and one by Miss Wilson on china mending. Miss Wilson exhibited a glass sugar bowl that had been in use for 20 years since it had been broken and mended by the method shown, which was to cement the edges with flake white and then to put the article away for at least a fortnight before using it again. Mrs. James Bibby gave a most interesting travel talk on Switzerland, a beautiful series of water colour sketches being exhibited to illustrate the talk.

The points prize for the competition for best article made from a yard of cretonne was won by Mrs. W. Timms, -who had made a bathing “carry-all.” Votes of thanks were accorded the ladies who had helped on Federation Day; Mr. D. R. Mills, for loan of table; the ladies who took part in the folk dancing and Mrs. Pendray, who played the music for the dancing; and Mr. J. A. Chambers, for the donation of a notice board. The hostesses for the day were: Mesdames Griffiths, J. Johnstone, Goodeve and F. E. Mcßoberts. New members elected were:—Mrs. T. Given, Mrs. G. Gideon, Mrs. L. Wood and Mrs. Saunders.
