NAVAL DEFENCE

NX Control Retained

SINGAPORE BASE EXPENDITURE

OBLIGATIONS TO BE MET

(Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day.

The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes stated to-day that the Government has decided not to accept the recommendation of the National Expenditure Commission that the New Zealand naval defence force should be transferred to the control of the British Government. It is intended to carry on under the present system. Referring to the Commission’s recommendation that the expenditure on the Singapore Naval Base should be curtailed, Mr. Forbes said the Government did not intend to make any reduction at present as the annual payment had already been reduced from £125,000 to £lOO,000. It was intended to keep up that payment. In the meantime the Government, he said, had a definite assurance that the Singapore Base would be completed.
