HARBOURING CHARGE

AGAINST ESCAPEE’S WIFE

LATTER STILL AT LARGE

(Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, Last Night. A married woman, Vera Grace Hall, aged 23, a waitress, who is alleged by the police to have been harbouring the escaped prisoner Frederick Wil'iam Schuter, was arrested at a house in Freeman’s Bay on Saturday. She appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt', S.M., in the Police Court, and was charged with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of her release on probation. Counsel for the defence said that accused had told him that she ■was the wife of Schuter, whom she had married in March 1931. A short time before her marriage she had ■ been placed on probation, one of the conditions being that she should not associate with Schuter.

In granting a week’s adjournment on the application of the police, the magistrate suggested that the accused should be placed in the care of the

female probation officer during the period of remand. “I am afraid I cannot accept the responsibility,” said Major Gordon. She added that the accused had been on probation for false pretences as far back as 1927.

Detective Moore, who arrested the accused, said that the woman was the wife of Schuter. They had. been living together as recently as last Saturday ■when the woman was taken, into custody. Sehuter was still at large. The accused was remanded on bail of £5O.
