Liquor at Dances
“This board views with deep concern the evils creeping into public dances, especially the introduction of liquor, and expresses the hope that church-people throughout the archdeaconry will use their influence to counteract these evils,” was the text of a resolution passed by the Taranaki Archdeaconry Board at its annual meeting in New Plymouth. The opinion was expressed, says a Taranaki exchange, that the trouble was caused by outsiders not the regular dancers, who went to the halls with the object of selling liquor. By another resolution, moved by Archdeacon Gavin and seconded by Mr. G. W. Were, the board respectfully requested the committees of various districts and other halls to do their best to combal"the evils at present connected with public dances, especially the introduction-of liquor. It was decided to forward a copy of the resolution to the authorities charged with the licensing of halls, and to request their co-operation in the matter.
