POSITIONS OF TEAMS AT END OF FIRST ROUND The following tables denote the positions of the various teams at the end of the first round in the Central Hawke’s Bay championship competitions (completed on Saturday): — SENIOR

TAKAPAU v. WAIPAWA.

(From our own correspondent.) At Takapau on Saturday the home football club, senioi - fifteen played Waipawa, which had one man short, which was very unfortunate as the team was weak and no ma "ch for the Takapau players, who showed an improvement under their new coach (Mr. Quinn). The combination was good and the backs have got a turn of speed which is hard to combat when they get a chance.

The Waipawa Club has an outstanding player in their captain. Rupuhu, who worked hard and was everywhere defending his side. The Takapau seniors had to draw on the juniors foi' two players, which was unfortunate for the younger team as it weakened them against the H. 5.0.8. at Waipukurau. The game ended in a win fo 1 ’ Takapau, 26, Waipawa 5. Mr. A. G.. Parker acted as referee H.B. SUMMARY The following is a summary of results of play in games in the senior grade on Saturday: — Napier H. 5.0.8. (9) v. Technical 0.8. (5). M. 8.0.8. (9) v. Celtic (3) Pirates (14) v. Tamatea (7). Hastings H. 5.0.8. (8) v. Hastings (8). Australian Rugby N.S.W. v. QUEENSLAND FORMER DRAW AND WIN SYDNEY, Last Night. A Rugby League match, New South Wales versus Queensland ended in a draw, nine points each. In a Rugby Union game at Toowoomba, New South Wales defeated Queensland by 16 to 8. MERIVALE JUBILEE FIFTY YEARS’ HISTORY Fifty years of prominence in the football field were completed by the Merivale Football Club which has just celebrated its golden jubilee. It is a far .cry from the prosperous club of""to-day to the night of May 12, 1882, when a number of young men interested in football

gathered at the Carlton Hotel, on the corner of Papanui Road and the North Belt (now Bealey Avenue). They had been playing together for a season or two, and they all agreed that it would be just as well to form some kind of club. Accordingly they joined together under the name of “Merivale,” and adopted the colours navy blue and white hoops, which were later registered with the Canterbury Rugby Union. The following were the officials for the season elected at that memorable meeting: President, Mr P. McDevitt; captain, Mr Horace Buck; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. Stewart; committee, Messrs F. Wilkinson, G. Judd, G. Dale, H. Wilson, W. Lock and H. Lowry. Others present were Messrs C. Wilson, Arthur Gapes, Alf. Gapes, R. R. Tucker, W. Wilkinson, F. Broughton, H. Garrick and W. Broughton.

A True Test.

A true test of the success- of any club is the list of club players who have played in representative matclies. First of all, the New Zealand representatives——eleven in all— F. J. Brooker, A. E. Cooke, R. F. Cooke, W. A. Drake, W. A. Ford, W.

B. Fuller, G. Gillett, E. W. Hasell, W. J. Mitchell, C. J. Oliver and D. Sandman. Next in order of merit come those who have represented the South Island: F. J. Brooker, N. Carnegie, R. J. Cooke, W. G. Duggan, F. T. Evans, W. A. Ford, W. B. Fuller, G. Gillett, E. W. Hasell, A. R. Johnstone, W. Maxwell, J. MeGuffog, C. J. Oliver, A. Plank and D. Sandman. Then come those who have represented the province of Canterbury. This is a long list. From 1882 to 18 91 there were sixteen; 1892 to 1901, twenty-six; 1902 to 1911, nineteen; 1912 to 1921, fourteen; and from 1922 to 1931, fourteen, making a grand total of 89, which reflects great credit on the club. THE RIGHT SPIRIT! “Quidnunc,” otherwise known as “know all,” must have got a severe set back when our much discussed senior team put up such a splendid showing against Carterton, and went on to win from Masterton last Saturday, comments the Featherston representative of the “Wairarapa News.” When it was first proposed to have a senior team in Featherston a little cold water was spilt. However, the wiser counsel decided to have a senior team, and a senioi' team we have. On a recent night they were seen out practising in good numbers in anticipation of their match against Old Boys on Saturday, which will be a good game. We do not say that they will win; at the same time we don't say they will lose. Anyway, what does it matter who wins, as long as it is good clean, interesting football, similar to that witnessed last Saturday.
