TE AUTIS ON WAIPUKURAU GROUND With cold weather prevailing and in the presence of a fairly large crowd of spectators the Onga Onga and Te Auro College senior fifteen met for the first time this season, the fixture thkingplace in Waipukurau. Mr Whitworth (Onga Onga) was the The Teams Onga Onga (Blue and Black): — Peters, wadswortii, Haldane, Cochrane. Ross, Walker, Chute, Buchanan, Spa-ek-man, Fremantle, Crawley, Tuftey, Dassler, Douglas, Rasmussen. Te Ante College (Red and Black): — Newton, Goldsmith, Burn, Pile, Tonga, Merrett, Pone, Tibble Kerrigan, Paerata Rangi, Parker, Waititi, Utiku, Emery. . - . 1 The Play Onga Onga won the toss and Tibble kicked off for Te Ante. A fine kick to the Reds gave them a contemporary advantage. A further penalty awarded to this side enabled a shot at goal to be taken, but without any fruitful result. In any case a Collegian was in front of the ball and a scrum followed. Onga invaded and a free kick aided them in reaching the Reds’ 22 line. Cochrane received the ball -and found the line. A good loose rush on Onga’s part headed by Rasmussen, enabled the Blues to enter the College 25. Misdirected passing spoiled an Onga back movement. From a passing rush Wadsworth secured at a corner following upon a passing attack initiated by Cochrane who came across from the opposite wing. The kick, taken by Douglas, was a failure, the ball failing to rise. Onga Onga 3 Te Ante 0

Returning the ball from the kickoff, Onga again assumed the offensive. Ruru was responsible for stemming the tide of attack, and evading several opponents lined at half way. A moment later Ruru made a good run and passed to Goldsmith in mid-field. The latter was grounded however, before he had proceeded far. A little later Ruru was again prominent and carried the ball into Onga territory. Merrett lined well in Onga's twenty-five, but the Onga forwards soon transferred play to the Reds’ side of half-way. Onga assumed the offensive and had Te Ante penned on its line for a time. Peters essayed a field goal, but the effort was far from fruitful. A penalty award aided the defenders momentarily, but Haldane punted across the goal-line and the Reds accepted a force-down. Following upon desultory play Tibble and Pile were responsible for opening up the game, the ball finally reaching Goldsmith, who was collared in the Onga twenty-five. Keeping up the attack, the Reds readied the Onga line, where one of the forwards, Emery, forced his way across. The attempt by Merrett to goal failed. Onga Onga 3 Te Ante 3 On resuming, Te Ante invaded, but Walker lined to good purpose—at the half-way flag. For a time give and take play ensued, confined to the vanguards. A penalty award gave Onga relief and the ball was carried into the Te Aute confines. Tibble opened up play from a scrum, but the Onga forwards gained possession and reached the Reds’ twenty-five line, where a free-kick afforded the defenders relief. At this stage Rasmussen was injured on the head, but after a brief interval carried on. From a penalty awarded 4 5 yards out, Douglas attempted to goal, but. the ball went wide. A rpoment later Onga forced down from a punt across the line. Gaining the ball from a scrum Chute passed out, but the ball was missed and the Reds attacked. Tibble sent the ball out to the backs, but Goldsmith was collared before he had got going. Play continued in Onga territory, till Ruru seized an opening and scored near tlie goal. The try was converted by Waititi. Te Aute 8 Onga Onga 3 Second Spell Immediately following the score gained by Ruru, half-time was sounded. On resuming, Te Aute indulged in a loose attack and almost scored from a movement in which Tibble figured prominently. Then a strong Te Aute attack ensued, Waititi, gaining a try, he converted. Te Aute _ 13 Onga Onga 3 Shortly afterwards another try was

scored by Ruru for Te Ante, the effort by Waiti convert being unsuccessful. Te Ante 16 Onga Onga 3 Even play marked the greater part of this spell, first one side and then the other corssing th half-way dividing line. A free kick enabled Te Ante to romve play from its twentyfive, but Onga kept up an attack. In midfield, from a scrum, Chute passed to Walker, but the latter held the ball too long and was collared in possession. Chute set the backs in

motion on Onga’s side of half-way and all handled well, Wadsworth gaining much ground. A few minutes later Cochrane scored near the goal as the result of taking a long pass. Haldane converted. Te Ante 16 Onga Onga 8 On the aggressive, Ruru passed to Goldsmith, but the winger ran into the ruck and was downed. From a bright passing movement on the part of Onga backs, Cochrane scored well ou p Douglas was unable to convert. Te Ante ; 16 Onga Onga 11 Onga continued to press strongly, till play was interrupted as the result of an injury to Wadsworth, who had to leave the field. Good passing by the Red backs in the Onga twentyfive, saw Goldsmith score, near a corner. No goal resulted. Te Ante 19 Onga Onga 11 A minute later Tibble ran across for a try, well out. No goal.
