UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

More Money Wanted

THE WAIPL El RAU POSITION LOCAL COMMITTEE’S ACTION A meeting of the Waipukurau Unemployment Committee was held last evening in the Borough Council Chambers, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. R. McLean) presiding. The chairman stated that the main reason for calling the meeting was to see what action could be taken in order to secure a bigger allocation of money for relief work. It was imperative that something should be done. The average earnings received by the four-day per week men over the past 12 weeks, were only £1 IOSj while those of the* three day tier week men were £1 4s. Many of the men had now reached the end of their resources. What little savings they had had were now gone and their families were in need of clothes, boots and other necessities. The number of unemployed were daily increasing, during the last week, eight additional men having registered, making the total 102. In March, the number registered was 79, an increase of 23. While the numbers were increasing the money allocated was decreasing. The average shortage per week had been nearly £l4. After some discussion as to how best to help, it was unanimously decided to make strong.representations to the Unemployment Board for a greater weekly allocation.
