Fertilisers and Weeds
VALUE OF TOP-DRESSING
AS MEANS OF ERADICATION
Top-dressing with certain of the finely-ground, powdered types of fertilisers on cereal crops and grassland is now' generally recognised as the most effective means of destroying such weeds as charlock, yellow rattle, buttercup and hedge mustard. The effectiveness of the treatment depends, however to a certain degree on the way in which the fertiliser is distributed, the presence of dew on the leaves at the time when the dressing is made being an essential feature in its success. This may be explained by the fact that the leaves of weeds such as those mentioned are rough and hairy, and, when damped by the dew, offer an exceptionally good hold for the fertilisers, which by reason of their unique properties cause the leaves and ultimately the plants to shrivel and die. It will at once be appreciated that if Nature alone is to be the controlling factor, the ideal time for application is limited to the earlier part of the day, that is, before the dew has disappeared.
