NEWS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD Estate of Lord Balfour The estate of the late Lord Balfour has been sworn at £158,115. Death of Lon Chaney Advice has been received from Los Angeles (California) that Lon Chaney, motion picture character actor, died to-day of pneumonia. Air Tarvel Abroad. The State Department announced that negotiations have been started with Australia and other Governments for reciprocal agreements facilitating air travel by Americans abroad and foreigners in the United States. The Trouble in India. The situation on the north-west frontier of India which appeared to be improving, has become worse during the week-end. A serious clash occurred yesterday near Domei, in the Bannu district between Government armed forces and a large armed force of Hathikhel Wazirs. The Palestine Mandate The report of the Mandates Commission on the Palestine disorders expresses the opinion that they cannot be regarded as a sudden explosion of popular passion. Although the Arab attack directed against the Jews caused resentment, the trouble was really due ■to political disappointments attributable to the parties of the mandate, primarily Britain. Poisonous Gas Mask. The “News-Chronicle” correspondent at Berlin says German chemists declare themselves satisfied with the lessons learnt in a three hours “gas bombardment” on the suburb of Kaiserslauten, Bavaria, directed by two well-known professors. Poisonous gases oij> the deadliest kind were used, but a now type of gas mask is said to have completely protected the firemen and policemen who “defended” the locality. Kidnapped Baby Sensation The kidnapped baby sensation has been revived by a statement in the “Daily Telegraph” that Mrs Pither who has been missing since the real story, has been located in a house on the outskirts of London by officials of Scotland Yard, who have not ceased their search since she -went missing. It is understood the next chapter in the extraordinary affair will be centred in the Courts, because Mr Pither is alleged to be guilty of a false registration of birth. Finance of Australia. Sir Otto Niemeyer, in a speech, here, said the resolutions at the Melbourne Premiers’ conference, which had been received satisfactorily in London, were merely the scaffolding upon which to build in future. The Governments of Australia must balance their Budgets and keep them balanced. It was essential that all maturing debts be met regularly. He emphasised that if rates of interest to Australia were to be decreasing gradually it could only be done by limiting other demands for money ond arranging Budgets so that ihey did not unduly encroach on private industry. The> basis had to bo on the side of a reduction .of expenditure rather than increased taxation.
