WOODVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of tho ■ Woodvillo County Council was held i yesterday. I’re.scnt—Crs Hughes} (cliaii man), Mephei'son, Norman, I M. Grainger, Gildea, and Logan. I OOKI.KSI’OXIiICNOh was read and dealt with as follows; From Kaiianga County Council, concerning the advisabililty of action being renewed to bring pressure to bear on Government to take over tbe Manawatu Gorge Road a} a National read. Tbe Kaiianga body agreed tiiat early in the coming session of .Parliament, a deputation from all the local bodies now coni i ibuting to cost of maintenance of the road should proceed to Wellington and interview the Premier and Minister of Public Works in the matter. —Cr Grainger pointed out that'at the last Counties’ Conference, the mat ter of requesting the Government re taking over the road was dismissed, lie thought the proposal of the Kairanga County should meet Iho a 'mi obation of the W oinl ville ('on iI v. Cr G i'dea asked the reason for this attitude. —-Gr Giainger pointed out that the Conlercnee considered it would encourage the nationalisation of all roads.—On his motion it was agreed lo inform the Kaiianga body that the Wood.ille Conned agreed with its proposals. From the IVaipawa Hospital ami Charitable Aid Board forwardbg a statement of Its roe-ipis and expenditure for the last twelve months, and also notifying' the Council of its contiibutlon for the incoming year, which, woiked out on the capital value of the County, amounted to cool.--—The chairman said when lie came here lirst the County’s contribution was then it jumped to £l2O, and successively to fil.’iU, £l5O and A'FSO, and now it was tool. Ho wished to know’ what became of the money.—Cr Crainger stated that he had seen the Hoard’s statement of accounts, and he was perfectly satisfied that it could lower the rate. Ho felt certain that the Board was doing its host in keeping the rate in reasonable bounds. He suggested Hint a special role bo struck for the County’s contribution to the IVaipawa. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board so that the ratepayers would know exactly where and bow the money was spent. He gave notice to move; a‘motion to this effect at the next meeting of the Council.— Agreed to. From the .Public, Works Department, notifying that it was advancing near the time tor the reception of applications for (!■■overnment grants.—i t was decided on the motion of Cr Grainger that consideration of matters of tipplying for grants be held over for a month its councillors bad received no warning that this business would be discussed at the meeting and no stipulations were made. In conjunction with the same .subject the members of the various ridings are to inspect their districts in company with the overseer for the purpose of seeing what money is required for works in the different ridings. An application for an increase in salary of about Cl per month was received from live employees of the Council.

Cr Grainger, as a representative at last Counties’ Conference mentioned that a proposition embodying the taxation of motor cars was ailii nied in principle, hut no definite stand was made. Cr Grainger said the rapidity with which Cl* Escott had goim about this matter as M.P. fen- the district was eloquent testimony to that gentleman's work in the district. Ho complimented Cr Eseotl uu his colei ity in getting the work put in hand.

It was decided to call tenders for repairing the Otawhao road, for which the Government grant amounted to X‘l4-o.—The overseer lopurtcd that nothing had been done in connection with the road under the Ngawapurua bridge. Cr Logan considered it was time something was dune. The chairman pointed out that the work woaid cost a lot of monev. He did not know where the road was. Cr Logan moved, That the overseer be granted permission to fill up the ruts complained of on parts of Ngawapurua luidge road.”—This was seconded bv Cr Grainger and carried.

The ranger waited on the Council and reported (hat a number of people failed to register their dogs. Ho had wained them on several occasions, but still they did not register the animals. Cr Grainger stated that the aim m n(: of sheep worrying that went on in the spring in the Maharahara Hiding was absolutely disgraceful. He moved, “ That the delinquents he summoned for not complying with the requirements of registration.’ 1 (Jr McPherson seconded the motion, and it was carried.

A complaint was received from John tlalloway. Maharahara, re the wandering of a neighbor’s cattle, which caused him some annoyance.

The chairman stated that he reported the matter to the ranger.— It was decided to inform Mr Galloway that Council had a motion for yicoplo who allowed cattle to wander. Should he he troubled again lie would do best to run the cattle into a paddock and send for the ranger.

A communication from the Pahiatua County Council stated that its engineer had berm instructed to have all rubbish cleared away from the Gorge biidges, so mitigating danger of lire.

Cr Logan moved " That the Paid atna body be asked to reconsider its decision and see its way to insta tanks.”

Cr McPherson seconded the mo l ion, and it was carried. The Palmerston Borough Council no!died that with reference to bad slate of the Upper Gorge B r idgo complained of by the local Council, no action has been taken. The chairman said the Council won Id have to take some action as the Woo;! villa County was responsible' for anything that happened.

Cr Grainger said the matter could nut be done as the controlling body (the Pahiatua Council) had not replied to Council’s letter drawing attention to the condition ot the bridge, lie moved, “ That they be again written to, asking for a reply to the letter forwarded by the Woodville County.”—Cr Gikloa seconded the motion, which was

The overseer stated that in company with the Inspector of Permanent ways he had inspected the level crossing at Maharahara Station near McDonalds, and the inspector stated that the matter would be looked into.

(Jr Logan complained of rubbish left to lie on the Mas ter tun road. He moved that “ persons leaving refuse on roads he informed that if they did nut remove the nuisance from in front of his land within 1-f davs proceedings would be taken. —Carried.
