Borough Council.

The monthly meeting of the Woodvilla Borough Council was held last night. There were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. Burnett), and Cis McKibbin, Nicholas, Shaw, Horne, Liwrenoe, Brook, and MoILbbiu. CORRESPONDENCE, Letters were nad and dealt with as follows From G- noral Manager Railways, /v the siding access to the corporation gaswoiks, stating the matter would be duly considered, and a reply sent as soon as possible.—Received.

From the Defence Storekeeper, notifying the forwarding of six Mauser rifles and two MartiniHerni rifles as trophies of the late South African war.—The Mayor reported that the trophies had arrived. From the Commissioner of Taxes, asking on behalf of the Secretary of State for the colonies, for information regarding rating on unimproved value of land both for municipal and State purposes in New Zealand.--Some discussion took place as to whether the system of rating was beneficial or not. No councillor, however, seemed to have a decided opinion on the matter, so the subject dropped.—The letter was received.

From J. B. Veale, stating that at first glance it would seem that the price proposed to bo charged him for water for motive purposes was prohibitive, but he would go fully into the matter aad write definitely to the Council later on.—Received.

From the Secretary, Municipal Association, Wellington, notifying date of annual conference.—Agreed that the Mayor of Wellington be asked to represent the Woodville Borough Council.

From the Waipawa District Hospital, staling that the levy for the current year is £23 4s 4d.—To be paid. From Ladies’ Benevolent Society, thanking the Council for the use of the Borough Chambers for their meetings.--. Received. From the Borough Overseer, forwarding quotations for pipe cutters, taps, &c.—The Mayor reported having arranged with Mr Pickfo d to purchase necessary tools, &c., in Auckland, which was done.—The action was endorsed.

From Chas. G. Scott, complaining of cattle straying on the streets.— Agreed that the Banger be empowered to summons anybody whose cattle have been iu the pound more than four times within three months.

From 0. Banks, applying for a week’s leave of absence. Granted.

Prom B. H. Leigh, forwarding sample of poisoned grain,—Received. Prom the Secretary to the Library Committee, forwarding certain suggestions which were dealt with as follows: —1. That (he question of frosting the windows stand over fcJ the present. 2. That the Arm at Home to supply with books at a accepted. 3, 4. That library section be trim REPORTS. The Inspector reported as fo • lows:— Notwithstanding the heavy rains which we have had during the last month, the borough streets are in very fair order. The Borough contractor has commenced the metalling of the various streets authorised by the Council. McLean Street from tho Church Hill to Sowry Road has been done, with the exception of breaking the large stones, which will be attended to immediately the whole of the metalling has been completed. The levelling of earth round the library, and the laying of pipe drains to carry the roof water off same, is being proceeded with. Twenty yards of limestone required for patching has been put on the McLean Street footpath. Two building permits have been ia» sued daring the month. The Poundkeeper and Ranger forwarded reports. —Received. THE RATE. In pursuance of notice Or McKibbin moved, and Cr Nicholas l seconded, “ That the Council make' a general rate in terms of ‘ TheMunicipal Corporations Act, 1900/ and ‘ The Eating Act, 1894.,’ of Threepence and Five-eighths of « Penny in the Pound on the Unimproved Value of all rateable property appeasing on the Valuation Roll now in force for the Borough of Woodville ; such rate being for a period of twelve months from the Ist April, 1906, to 3lst March, 1907 r and to be made payable in one amount on Ist day of June, 1906/’ Carried. GENERAL. Agreed that the question of the appointment of committees for the year stand over till the special meeting next Wednesday.

After discussion, it was agreed’ that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor to arrange with Mr Jickell, and, having done so, that tenders be called for the work immediately. At a later stage Or Horne referred to the time between delivery of the timber and completion of the contract, which was too short, and! would not allow contractors a fairchance. It was agreed that the Mayor nrterview Mr Jickell on this matter also, with a view to extending the time for a month, and that tenders close at next ordinary meeting of the. Council.

Accounts amounting to £l7l 15s* 10d were passed for payment, and! the meeting closed.
