The Meikle Commission.

Dunedin, May 1.

The Meikle ; Commission opened this morning before Judges Edwards and Cooper. Mr Atkinson (Wellington) appeared for Meikle and Dr Findlay for the Crown. At the request of counsel it was agreed to rise daily at 4 o’clock.

Mr Atkihson then addressed the Court at some length, and urged that if Meikle coull bo shown to have bean rightly convicted, ha ought to be sent back to gaol as a determined and persistent scoundrel. If, on the other hand, he had been wrongly convicted oo the evidence of a perjured witness, and Meikle’s innocence established, neither Commission, nor Government, nor Parliament would have much inclination to haggle over the terms of redress to whioh the man was entitled.

There are, it is understood, fifteen witnesses for Meikle and twelve on the other side, and the Commis-ion is expected to last a considerable time.
