A Sensational Suicide.

IN THE SALVATION AEMY RING.

Auckland, April 80.

A man named Walter Newman, aged 31, shot himself with a revolver in the Salvation Army ring in Vic-toria-street on Saturday night. Ha asked if he could speak to the officer in charge, and as the latter waa about to speak to him ho put a revolver to Lis mouth and shot himself, dying shortly after. Newman was an Englishman and had lately been working at Morrinsville. The cause of his action is unknown. Later.

The band was playing and the Salvationists were singing the hymn “He pardoned a rebel like me.” Newman was heard to say, “Yes, He pardoned a rascal like me.” Adjutant Dixon told Newman to wait till the hymn was finished and then he would speak to him. Then Newman drew a revolver and blew his brains out. The Adjutant’s hands were covered with blood, but he was uninjured. By his instructions the band played some lively airs to allay the excitement till the police arrived and removed the body. Substquently it was learned that Newman was a single man, aged 31. He was a surveyor on a visit from Morrinsville, and he was well connected in England, hailing from Earle’s Coorae, Worcester. He was thiuking of getting married. The cause of the tragedy is unknown.
