Mr Seddon has received the following communication through the Secretary of State for the Colonies : “ Referring to your telegram respecting the San Francisco disaster, the following has been received from his Majesty’s Ambassador at Washington ; —‘ The President desires me to ixpress to the Government and people of New Zealand his deep appreciation of their sympathy. He feels surs that they will understand the people of the United States are none the less grateful because it has been decided that it will be unnecessary to accept help from outside.” Under these circumstances the New Zealand Government has decided to send to the Now Zealand agent at San Francisco the sum of five thousand dollars (£1260) for expenditure in the relief of suffering and to ensure comforts for New Zealanders in San Francisco who may have suffered by (he disaster.
