Maharahara.

(From our own Correspondent) SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the Maharahara West School was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs Goldfinch (chairman), Barnett (sec.), Galloway, Lambert, McCurdy and Murray. The Chairman spoke in strong language on the manner in which the last meeting had been reported in the Press, iHe said it was a reflection on the committee, and he considered that meetings should be reported correctly or not at all.

Mr Murray said, as chairman of the last meeting, he considered the reports that appeared in the Press were a fair and accurate record of the proceedings. Mr Goldfinch explained that he was not referring to The Examines. A letter was read from the Education Board, re winter holidays. The matter had been dealt with at last meeting. It was resolved to apply to the Board for a grant of £35, for the erection of shelter shed and porch. It was decided to obtain possession of the school lamp, which was at present in the hands of the dancing class. A long discussion took place re cleaning the school, a specification was drawn up, and it was decided to invite applications for the position of caretaker to be in by next meeting. Messrs Lambert and Barnett were appointed a visiting committee for the month.

The Inspector’s report was then read and criticised. The report was not considered satisfactory, and it was decided to write the headteacher and ask her to improve matters in certain directions. ROAD MACHINE. The County Council road machine is again at work in this district, and is now doing some excellent work. It appears that the first time the machine was worked here the roads were very hard and dry, and not having sufficient power to draw the machine, the work done was not very satisfactory. But experience always teaches-^the men now thoroughly understand the machine, and with the increased power provided they are now doing some splendid work. The opinion of the ratepayers is that the machine was a good investment, and that it has come to stay.
