THE STEELE-PAYNE FAMILY.

It was indeed unfortunate that this excellent company should have struck about as bad a night as it was possible to have for their entertainment in Woodville. It was gratifying, however, to know that there were so many who would brave the elements to patronise the concert, and they were well repaid, as a more enjoyable programme than that given could scarcely be conceived. Miss Lizzie Payne has lost none of her old charm, and was accorded quite an ovation on Wednesday evening. It would be hard to find an instrument that this lady could not play, while her singing is always most delightful. The absence of Miss Maude Payne threw a great deal more work on to Miss Lizzie Payne’s shoulders, but she cheerfully contributed all the items set against her sister’s name. A violin solo was delightfully played, while the song “ A picture no arflst can paint,” was one of the gems of the evening. An artist of the very highest rank is Miss Agnes Rahilly. We have never heard Coon songs better sung, and never hope to. Her recitations proved her an elocutionist of great ability, while the young lady took a large share in all the concerted items, whether instrumental or vocal. Miss Kate Maher charmed the audience with her singing, particularly of “ When the pigs begin to fly.” Mr James Williams sang “ Davy Jones’ Locker” in fine style, while Mr Steele’s comic items evoked roars of laughter. The instrumental and vocel trios, duets and quartettes were splendidly given and we look forward, with pleasure to the return visit of this clever company.
