Sensational Stickingup Case.

ROBBERY UNDER ARMS. Sydney, September 2. Another sensational sticking-up case has occurred. The mail coaoh from Whiteoliffs (the centre of the opal mining district) to Wilcannia was making the night journey, and drew up at a gate. A passenger named Ranter jumped down and opened it, when a masked robber stepped out and fired a revolver, wounding Banter in the forearm. He ordered the driver and three other passengers to stand against a fence while he Fecured the mail bags. He warned the driver if he attempted to return to Cliffs he would be shot. The bags contained a quantity of valuables, including packages of opals. In his hurry the robber overlooked several valuaWe parcels of opals in the boot of the coach. The police discovered many opened letters and a number of crossed cheques, and marks of a bicycle in the vicinity of the robbery. The coach robber made the driver hand over a knife, which he used in opening litters, poeketing the noteß and other valuables promiscuously, occupying over an hour, during which time a bicyclist rode up. The robber made him stand with the others till finished. He placed the loot in an empty mail bag and rode away on the bicycle.

Sydney, September 8. The mail robber made a rich haul, but the exaok amount is not known. It is estimated at from £9OO to £I4OO in notes, and £SOO in opalß and jewellery. The loot included three paroela of opals. There is no bank at Wbitecliffs, thus necessitating the forwarding of large amounts by post. An attempt was made to rob the mail sometime ago, but failed. The robber allowed the passengers to go scot free, and one carried a la'<?e sum. The horses and harness remaiued unnoticed.
