The Southern Floods
TAIERI PLAIN UNDER WATER RAILWAY TRAFFIC STOPPED TERR’RLE DAMAGE. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, February 9. The bridges at Maheno, Otepopo, and Bushy will be sufficiently repair.il to allow the express to get through to-night. All Fains between Dunedin and Christchurch resume running to-morrow, except the Kurow branch between Beiton’s andHakateremea. The Outram branch is still under water, and 'lns morning that por ion between Rii erside and Gladiield was submerged eight foot, the roof of the Riverside station being just visible. The '-.vatai* is still over the line between 0 whirs in id llculej. The damage in ShSg valley is also very great, and several farmers near Waikoua-i i, and especially Cherry rarm lose contfjvlerably. The of William Swanson was found a <evv y.-raa of where he disappeared^ OamaßU, February 9. The beach here is strewn with carcases of sheep JScc. t destroyed in the * Kakanui flood. W The river bank between Otakaia and Greytowu gave way during the night. The coach with the mail which left Milton for Mosgiel last night was unable to get through on account of the break in the ordinary road.- Consequently communication by vehicles is also cut off to the South, and nothing can be done with this por ion ot the liuo until the water subsides. The hue at Clarksville and Waitahuna was cleared this morning for trains to pass to and from Lawrence. The state of the Taieri Plain is deplorable. From within two miles of Mosgiel right up to Grey town the plain is almost covered with water. At Outram last night people remained up all night, fearing the embankment would give away. The water during the night reached within a few inches of the top, and in some places the embankment bad to be made slightly higher. The river then commenced to fall slowly, and is now down fully four feet. From Owhiro to Greytown, about four miles of the main railway line is under water, and it will probably be throe days before it is passable.
