Masterton, Last Night. A five-roomed house on the Upper Plain belonging to Mr Semouix was destroys! by fire last night. The origin is a mystery. Insurance: £IOO on house, £SO on furniture, and £l2 10s on dairy in North British Co. Me W. 5. Beetham has been elected Chairman of the Wairarapa North County Council for the fourth term. In the R.M. Court this morning Ell Strawbridge of Carterton was charged with having committed perjury in a civil case recently heard by stating that the signature to a contract for the •‘Picturesque Atlas’’ waa not his. Bowerman Bros; were recently nonsuited twice in a case in which they claimed £9 from Strawbridge for books delivered, and it is through this the present case has arisen. The evidence of the canvassing agent, Metcalf, is being taken. This Day. Metcalf swore Strawbridge signed list and contract. Judgment is reserved till Monday. William Ford, an old settler of this district, died rather suddenly this morning from influenza. Lieutenant A. G. Thompson, who has just resigned his commission on account of business requiring him to goto Pahiatua, was last night presented by the Masterton Bifle Volunteers with a handsome gold medal and testimonial.
