■ <> DANEVIRKE JOCKEY CLUB. ANNUAL RACE MEETING. The annual race meeting of the Dancvirko Jockey Club was held on the Taboraite course on Wednesday, some 1500 people being on the ground. Mr Poulsen had a booth on the course and was kept as busy as could be through the day, as were also the fruit stall and refreshment booth. The Danevirke band was in attendance and played through the day in a very creditable manner.
The first race was not got off for fully an hour after the advertised time. We published in last issue the results of the Maiden Hurdles and Handicap Hurdles. The time for the former was 3min Gsecs, and for Handicap Hurdles 4min 57 4-sths secs.
Maiden Plate.— Of 15 sovs., for all horses that never won public money at time of starting ; distance 1J miles ; weight for age. Entrance 15s.
For this event 14 horses were sent away to a bad start, Glenab being left on the post. When half way round The Ark looked as if he would land the stakes while Minnie was closing up rapidly. On coming round the corner however Link made a rush and got to the point and the horses passed the stand in the following order. Link (Cook) 1 Minnie (Ross) 2 Hesam (Peters) 3
Wandering Nun, First Chance, Waripipa, Exchange, First Trial, Cuddle Boon, Lillian, Hawera and Lady Cicely also ran. Totalisator £351. Dividend £6 lls. Time 2miu 20secs.
Danevirke Handicap. —Of 45 sovs, second horse to receive 8 sovs. from the stakes; distance about If miles. Nomination 20s, acceptance 255. The winner of any handicap of the value of £3O or over after declaration of weight to carry a penalty of 71b. Couranto (Raynor) 1 Hukatere (Morgan 2 Eclipse )Donovan) 3
Penguin, Swivel, Rough, Ruination, Pat, Kotiro, Tit Bit, The Ark and Kahu also ran.
The horses went away from a good start running past the stand in a bunch and continued well together, only one or two tailing off till about half way round when Couranto made his effort but was collared by Penguin who was coming up until his breastplate broke and got entangled in his legs, Couranto again taking the lead running in a winner. Time 3min 13sec. Totalisator £444, dividend £3 13s. Selling Race. —Of 15 sovs, Winner to be sold with all engagements for 15 sovs, any surplus to to be equally divided between the second horse and the funds of the Club ; distance about 1 mile; Maximum weight 9st 71b; 71b allowed for every £5 off selling prices. Entrance 15. Emmett (Stowe) 1 Fib (Sweeny) , ... 2 Lillian (Morgan) 3 New Chum, Rifleman, Spot Wandering Nun also ran.
Emmett lead from the start closely followed by New Chum until the corner was reached when Lillian made a rush and for a moment the three horses were neck and neck, but Emmett came out and landed a winner, Totalisator £2BB, dividend £3 lls, Time Imm 48 l-sth sec. Immediately after the race the horse was put up at auction and was bought in for £lss 10s. Members’ Handicap. —Of 20 sovs; distance about miles;. minimum weight 9st 7lb ; horses to be owned and ridden only by those who are members before January Bth. Nomination 10s, acceptance 10s. Penguin (Oowper) 1 Rough (Hunter) 2 Somnambulist (Mitchell) ... 3
Princess, Nikau, Straight Dincntn, and Venus also ran. The horses were sent away on pretty equal terms till the threequarters when Somnambulist came up and ran for first place, but when coming up the straight Penguin came to the front and won by a length. Totalisator £306, dividend £4 4b.
Flying , Handicap. —Of 20 sovs; distance f mile. Nomination 10s, acceptance 10s, Couranto (Eaynor) ... ... 1 Swivel (Cook) 2 Hukatere (Morgan) 3
Brown Duchess, Eclipse, Acolyte, Fleetwing, Kotiro, Native, Exchange, Tit Bit, and Spider also ran. The horses went off from . a splendid start, and raced in a cluster to the straight, when Couranto came on with a rush and passed the box with Swivel a good second. Totalisator £379, dividend £3 Is.
