WASTE LANDS BOARD.

The members of the Hawke's Bay Waste Lands Board held the usual monthly meeting at the Land Office on Wednesday morning : —Present—H. Baker (Chief Commissioner,) and Commissioners E. A. Haggen, R. Harding, and J. James. CORRESPONDENCE. Among the inward correspondence the following was read : From \V. Logan, owner of section 15, block 9, Woodville Survey District, requesting that the hush may be felled eu section 8, block G, along the boundary line, and offering to clear the line two chains in width at the rate of 32s Gd per acre.—To be informed that he can fell the bush one chain in width along the winmoil boundary if lie leaves the totaras standing, but the Board cannot pay for same, as Crown lands are not subject to the Fencing Act. p’rom Brooking and St Clair, on behalf of C. H. Christiansen, selector of section GB, block 3, Tahoraite Survey District, requesting the Board to allow him (Christiansen) a reasonable time in which to diepose of his property in Napier before insisting upon his taking up his residence on his section.—lt was decided to grant time as asked. From the Crown Lands Ranger, requesting that the addresses of selectors may be forwarded to him.—The Chief Commissioner to look after the matter. From Mr W. McLollauds, forwarding an instalment due on G. A. W. McLelland’s selections in block 14, Tahoraite Survey District.—The Chairman said the the letter had come from down South. The McLellands had changed their place of residence, and the Board had not their addresses. At their last meeting the Board passed a resolution ordering them to forfeit their land, but now an instalment had been received. The necessary amount of improvements had been completed on their land.—After some discussion it was decided to recind the former motion rc forfeiting the section. DEFERRED PAYMENT SECTIONS. The following application were received by the Board from deferred payment selectors to pay up the balance of their purchase money :—S. Johnson, sec. 1, block G, Woodville Survey District; J. Burnett, sec. IG, block 8, village of Kumeroa ; K. F. Mortenson, sec. 14, block 3, Norsewood Survey District; J. Hansen, sec. 16, block C, K. Mortensen, 24, Norsewood district ; E. V. Thomson, sec 20, block C, do ; A. McKay, sec. 24 block 9, Woodville Survey District. In the case of the first three the bali ancc was to be received. In Hansen's case the improvements had not been completed, and consequcnty the balance could not be received.—ln Mortensen’s case the balance could not be received until he has been in occupation for 3 years.—ln Thompson’s case the balance to be received, and in McKay’s the ran ger to report. TRANSFER. One application was read for transfer ring of deferred payment selections, _ it being that of Lawrig to Larson, section 27, block G, Norsewood Survey District. —Approved oi. ranger's retort. The Crown Lands ranger sent in his usual reports. They showed that the improvements in most cases were of a satisfactory character. There were a few cases, however, in which the necessary improvements had not been completed. The reports were adopted as read. extension of time. A number of selectors applied to the Board for an extension of time in refer* ence to sundry matters, which was granted, three months being given... LEAVE OF ABSENCE. A letter from Captain Russell, M.H.R., asking for leave of absence, he being away at Wellington.—Granted. leasing deferred payments sections. The Chairman laid on’ the table copies of the Herald and the Mercantile Gazette referring to the lease of a deferred payment section from R. Sturdy to G. Mason, and he asked wether this Was not a breach of the Land Act, remarking further that the Board could not well help taking notice of it as it stared them in face. Mr Haggen said that in, his opinion, it was it was a breach of the Act of 1883. The Board had forfeited the land of smaller settlers for breaches of the Act, and this could not be passed over. Others members concurred, and on the suggestion of the Chairman it was decided to lake legal advice on the matter. WASTE LAND. Mr Haggen thought that they should bo able to deal with that strip of land along the road about 2.1 miles from Woodville next season ; and Mr Baker said be- ' sides this there was section 2, Maungaatua, which should be dealt with at the next meeting of the Board. A few other uninteresting matters were discussed, and the Board adjourned.
