A QUERY.

(to the editor.) Sir, —Can yon inform yonr reader? where the County spends the rates raised in the Woodville Town district ? I see by the balance sheet just published that they received LIGoO to help to maintain the 70-Mile Bush road, and they spent on that same road —which is the main road through this township—the sum of Ll'dSS 2s 2d, so that they have a balance on that year from the Government grant. Then they have collected heavy rates out of the township, and got a Government subsidy on those rates also. But I want to know has a penny of the rates raised in the township, or of the subsidy, been spent in the Town district ? I trow not. I know that the County has lately been making a hog on the east side of the town, but I suppose as that is on the. 70Mile Bush road it wdll.be charged to the Government grant, as before. On looking around I cannot sec any place in the Town district where the County has spent any funds in the year ending olst March, 188 G. If that be so, where has the money been spent ? What has the Town members been doing, not to get us back some of the rates and subsidy. They seem to have taken no interest in the town getting any funds at all. Why could we not have a subsidy from the County out of our own rates and the Government sndsidy, so that the Town Board could have spent it in the Town .District? In the county balance-sheet there are subsidies to road and town boards of i'SGO sterling. Who got that ? Why could not Woodville be served like the rest, and get its, subsidy, instead of being just used for a bleeding machine for the County. Hoping you or some of your readers will be able to explain the matter, I am, &c., Eatepayer.
