THE CHORAL SOCIETY.

« r . • ; TO THE EDITOE OP THE INDEPENDENT Sir, — A letter signed "Subscriber" appeared in the columns of your contemporary on Saturday evening, with reference to the above socioty, and stating that a concert tfould not be given in consequence of the chui-lish-ness of the Sfceele Company ia having refused the use of the hall. As ibis statement is paloulated to do the' company some harm, I shall feel obliged if you will give publicity to my version of the affair, ia order to remove auy false impression on the mind of the public. On my arrival in Wellington, Mr Mowbray, on behalf of tlio Choral Society, came to me, and asked if I would let him have the hall on Thursday evening next. I replied that doing so would entail considerable inconvenience, bui if the society would assist me with a few voices ia the production of the play of "Macliolh," I would let them have tho hall Tor that ni[>ht. Mr Mowbray afterwards informed tne that he could no'o obtain v single voice, but would provide four or five instrumentalists. I then told him thai' as the society did not think fit to oblige mo, I coriaiiily must decline to let them tho hall. Upon second thoughts, however, taking into consideration I hat it was a local performance, I instructed Mr 8011, tho oustodinn, to after tliom the hall for Thursday week, which he did til; noon on Saturday. No acLion was taken by them in the matter, and ip tho evening tho letter appeared in tbo Post. Referring io " Subscriber's" opiuion that it is not " tho correct filling" to allow outsiders tho entire monopoly of the hall, I would ask him who supports the building ? if it is not tho " outsiders," a3 ho terms them. Nor can I see how thufc t'evm ctio be applied, for these very " outsiders" aro constantly travelling about New Zealnnd, and keep LUe money circulating in the colony. " I urn aware that this' letter should appear in this evening's Post, but I am anxious to lose no time in placing Lhe case in its true bearings before tho public, who I think will Inrdly endorse " Subscriber's" opinion as to the churlishness exhibited by (he Stoele Com-' puny.— l am, &c, John B. Steeib.
