SHIPPING SUMMARY.

The most important event of tho month in connection with the colonial shipping interest is the unfortunate loss of the fine screw steamer Taranaki, commanded by Captain Francis, and owned by theN.Z.S.N. Co. (Limited). Full particulars of this disaster (which occurred on August 20, the vessel striking on tho' Boat Harbor Rock, in Tory Channel) will bo found in another part of this paper. An official investigation resulted in tho 1 honorable exoneration of Captain Francis and his officers from all blame. It appears to bo pretty certain that tho steamer was carried out of her usual course by a very strong eddy or some unusual tidal disturbance. No lives were- lost. It is not yet known whether efforts will bo mode to raise her. The cargo was a very valuable one. The barque Henry Adderley, from London, consigned to Messrs Levin & Co., with a general and well-assorted cargo, is now nearly unloaded — having delivered it, in capital condition. Tim fine vessel will proceed to California direct in the course of tho week. The Excelsior, ship, which sailed from London and is now overdue, is anxiously looked for, and may bo hourly expected. During tho month, the Australasian colonies, and especially these islands, have been visited by extraordinary marine phenomena. Neptune has acted so strangely as to till tho minds of mariners and landsmen with much apprehension. What is termed a " tidal wave" (we are not sure that tho phrase is scientifically correct) has visited our shores, not doing much damage in the ports of the Middle or North Island, but destroying much propnrfcy at tho Chatham Islands, where a wave 35 feet high rushed in, and in a few moments entirely swept away an entire native settlement. These oceanic phenomena have been observed iu South Australia, New South Wales, and Tasmania. Considerable damage wus dono to tho shipping at Newcastle, N.S.W. The P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Co.'s fine steamship Kaikoura, Cupt. Darke, hence, arrived in Sydney at 2 a.m. on the 24th August, after a remarkably quick passage of lour days nineteen hours.
