O'Farrell, a lawyer's clerk, brother to a once well known Melbourne solicitor. He was living at Ballarat, but came to Sydney about three months ago. He fired at the Prince from the back when about only two paces off. The bullet entered two inches from the spine and passed through the muscles of the back, round by the ribs to the front of the abdomen. The Prince immediately fell exclaiming " My back is broken." Sir William Manning Beeing the Prince fall and hearing the second report threw himself down while the crowd rushed to raise the Prince and seize the assassin. The latter was only saved from being torn piecemeal, by the police exertions and those of the chief justice, who got severely handled while aiding the police. Numerous attempts were made to get th* prisoner away, and his clothes were torn to shreds. When placed on board the s.s. Paterson, the crow tried to seize him. ! Many ladies fainted as the Prince was borne by. He arrived at Sydney about five, and waa conveyed to Government house. The bullet was afterwards extracted, and the wound found to be not mortal, though causing great pain. Thousands of people were on the wharf expecting the Prince to land there. O'Farrell is described as a dissipated character and latterly supposed to be insane. It is stated, however, that he acted in concert with twenty other Fenians, and a £1000 reward for each accomplice has been offered and several arrests have already been made. Dunedin, Wednesday, 6 p.m. A monstee meeting is to be held on Friday to express horror of the attempt made to assassinate the Duke of Edinburgh, and sincere condolence at the sufferings he has sustained. A profound sensation has been caused by the news of the atrocity. " God Save fche Queen " has been sung in the Theatre, and performed in the churches ; and, on the walls of concert rooms, and public assembly halls, the words are displayed in large placards. Monday was celebrated as the anniversary of the Prince. The weather was beautiful, and the Fire Brigade Fete at Yauxhali was largely attended. His Honor the Superintendent has forwarded an address to the Duko of Edinburgh at Sydney, as well as another to her Majesty the Queen, the latter being sent through the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Tho first attempt made to raise the ship Bengal, now sunk at Port Chalmers, has been made, and failed. The cutter Fly has been totally wrecked at Oamaru.
